Thank you Firemen!!!
On April 12, 2012 the Albany Fire Department responded to a fire alarm at our building 99. The fire was in a 10th floor apartment. The fire fighters did a spectacular job controlling the fire which was contained within the single apartment.
On May 22, in appreciation for all they did, we held an event to give our thanks.
In addition to our heart-felt appreciation, the South Mall Towers Board of Directors gifted the fire department with a “fire curtain”. This modern invention is used in high rise buildings to block openings in a building such as blown out windows to prevent what fire fighters call the “blowtorch effect”.
During this fire we saw first hand how well the building performed to prevent spread of the fire. Our buildings were built with what is termed “fire rated construction”. In general, the safest place to stay during a fire is in your apartment with the door closed. If you can smell smoke, place wet towels at the bottom of the door to keep smoke out. Due to the fact that may residents are dependant on walkers and wheelchairs it is much safer for them to remain in their apartment. If you decide to leave the building, touch the door to see if it is hot. If it is hot, DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR. Remain calm… help is on the way. If you have a phone call 911 and give them your apartment number. If you don’t have a phone, be assured that the firemen WILL find you.
